Quick answer: ACP sheet price is not one number. It is set by the sheet’s thickness, aluminium skin thickness, core type (PE or fire-retardant), coating (PVDF or polyester) and brand tier, and then by how much sub-frame, wastage, height and design work your elevation needs. Rates also move with aluminium prices, so the only honest figure is one based on a site measurement. This guide explains each cost driver so you can read any quote with confidence.
Why ACP prices vary so much between quotes
Two contractors can quote very different rates for “ACP work” on the same building and both can be honest. One may be pricing a 4 mm sheet with 0.5 mm skins, PVDF coating and a galvanised sub-frame. The other may be pricing a 3 mm sheet with thin skins, polyester coating and a light frame. On the day of installation both look similar. Three monsoons later, they do not.
So before you compare totals, make sure each quote describes the same product and the same scope.
The material cost drivers
1. Total thickness
The common thicknesses are 3 mm (interiors, signage, low-exposure areas) and 4 mm (exterior cladding and elevations). Thicker sheets are stiffer, stay flatter over larger panels and resist wind and handling dents better.
2. Aluminium skin thickness
An ACP sheet is two aluminium skins bonded to a core. The skin is the part that actually takes weather and impact. Typical skins are:
| Skin thickness | Typical use | Cost effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 mm | Exterior facades, larger panels | Highest |
| 0.3 mm | Signage, interiors, sheltered exterior areas | Medium |
| 0.21 mm or thinner | Budget interior work | Lowest |
A sheet sold as “4 mm” with very thin skins is mostly core. Always ask for the skin thickness in writing.
3. Core: PE vs FR
- PE core (polyethylene) is the standard, lower-cost core.
- FR core (fire-retardant, mineral-filled) costs more. It is the safer choice for multi-storey buildings, public buildings and anywhere the fire authority or architect requires it.
For a tall commercial building, this is not a place to save money.
4. Coating: PVDF vs polyester
- PVDF coating holds colour and gloss far better under strong sun. For exterior work in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is the right choice.
- Polyester coating is cheaper and fine indoors, but on a sun-facing exterior it tends to fade and chalk sooner.
Special finishes such as metallic, wooden, stone-look, mirror and brushed cost more than solid colours.
5. Brand tier
There are national brands, regional brands and unbranded imports. Brand affects consistency of colour between batches, flatness, bond strength and the manufacturer’s warranty paperwork. Ask for the brand and product name to be written on the quote.
The installation cost drivers
6. Sheet size and wastage
The standard sheet is 1220 x 2440 mm (the “8x4”). If your panel layout does not fit the sheet well, offcuts are wasted and you pay for them. Good panel planning, and longer sheet lengths where available, can cut wastage noticeably.
7. Sub-framing
ACP is fixed on a frame of aluminium or galvanised steel sections anchored to the building. Frame material, section size, spacing and anchor type all affect cost. A weak or untreated mild steel frame is the most common hidden saving in cheap quotes, and it is the part that rusts first in humid and coastal areas.
8. Height, access and scaffolding
Ground-floor shopfront fascia is simple. A four-storey elevation needs scaffolding or other safe access, more handling time and more safety arrangements. Height always adds cost.
9. Design complexity
Flat rectangular panels are the cheapest. Curves, deep returns, cassette trays, grooves, cut-out lettering, louvres and multiple colours add routing, folding and fixing time.
10. Site location and logistics
Transport distance, unloading access, working hours permitted by the site and the need for a team to stay on site outside Coimbatore all affect the final rate.
11. GST
GST is charged on top unless the quote states it is inclusive. Confirm which in writing.
How to compare ACP quotes properly
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Rate per sq ft of finished, measured area | Lets you compare like with like |
| Thickness, skin thickness, core, coating, brand | Defines the actual product |
| Sub-frame material and section size | Decides long-term stability and rust |
| Sealant type and joint detail | Decides whether water gets behind |
| Scaffolding and access included? | Often left out and billed later |
| Measurement method | Is it measured on the finished face, including returns? |
| GST inclusive or exclusive | Avoids billing surprises |
Per sheet vs per sq ft: a per-sheet price is only a material price. It says nothing about wastage, frame, fabrication or fixing. For a finished elevation, ask for a per-sq-ft rate of finished area and a clear list of what is included.
Red flags in a very cheap ACP quote
- Only “ACP work” with no thickness, skin, coating or brand written down.
- No mention of the sub-frame, or “MS frame” with no galvanising or paint system.
- Scaffolding, sealant or transport listed as “extra at actuals”.
- Unusually small measured area compared with your drawing.
- Pressure to pay most of the amount before material arrives.
- No GST invoice.
Rates change, so measure first
ACP rates follow aluminium prices and supplier price lists, so a rate from a few months ago may not hold today. The honest answer to “how much will my elevation cost?” comes from measuring the site, fixing the specification and then pricing it.
How Cladex helps
Cladex Elevations is led by engineers Er. Sanjay M. and Er. Aravind M., with over 10 years of facade work across Tamil Nadu. Our approach to pricing is simple:
- We measure your site and agree the panel layout before quoting.
- We write the sheet specification, sub-frame and inclusions into the quote, so you can compare it fairly with any other.
- We explain where a cheaper option is fine and where it is not.
